Grant Cunningham is a professional Trombonist from Richmond, Virginia. Grant studied at Virginia Commonwealth University, under the direction of Dr. Ross Walter, associate professor of low brass. In the past Grant has performed with the Live! On Atlantic Allstar Band from 2018-2019. He has served as the Principal Trombonist of the VCU Symphonic Wind Ensemble from 2021-2022 under the direction of Dr. Terry Austin. He also served as Principal Trombonist of the VCU Symphony from 2022-2023 under the direction of Daniel Myssyk.
Grant regularly performs with his brass quintet, the [REDACTED] Brass Quintet, which he has been a founding member of since 2022. Alongside the members of the quintet, he visited Cartagena, Colombia in 2023 to perform on the IX Festival of Brass and to teach in schools for disadvantaged youth. Grant is also a founding member of the Bonarific Trombone Quartet, a group that has existed since 2021.
Grant also performs with the Richmond Brass Band known as The Mob. The Mob is a frequent performing group that is up and rising in the city of Richmond. Grant is also one of the founding members of this group and has been performing with them since 2022.
Grant is an experienced trombone soloist with a wide array of performed pieces, including an original work written by his close friend Andrew Johnson, "Bagel". Grant has also performed a number of standard pieces in the trombone literature, notably, the Ferdinand David Concertino, as well as the Launy Grøndahl Concerto. Grant is currently having several pieces commissioned for both him and his chamber ensembles to perform.
